Ontario kicked off 2025 by setting a new record for gaming activity, marking the most profitable month in the province’s history for regulated sports betting. According to iGaming Ontario’s (iGO) report for January 2025, Ontarians wagered $7.84 billion on sports, online casino games, and online poker in the month. This represents a slight increase of 0.24% from December 2024’s record and a notable 31% year-over-year rise.
Gross gaming revenue also hit new heights, surging to $328 million, surpassing the previous record of $291 million set in November 2024. Over the past year, operators’ gross revenue has grown by 36%, and the January total was nearly 13% higher than the previous record.
iGO also revealed that there were 1.1 million active player accounts in January, the highest ever recorded and a significant jump from around 877,000 in January 2024. These players generated an average revenue of nearly $300, the highest figure since September 2024.
While online casinos dominate Ontario’s market in both activity and revenue, January was a landmark month for licensed sportsbooks. Despite a dip in sports betting GGR (gross gaming revenue) in December 2024, sportsbooks rebounded strongly in January, generating $91.9 million in sports betting GGR. This figure represents a 133.8% increase from December and a 32.2% rise from January 2024, surpassing the previous record set in November 2024 by 17.1%. The $91.9 million in sports betting GGR came from nearly $1.2 billion in wagers, up 20.7% year-over-year and 3.6% month-over-month.
To date, Ontario’s regulated online gaming market has generated over $6.5 billion in total GGR, with approximately $4.7 billion coming from online casinos.
